Tap-Tap-Tapping

A friend sent me a movie clip recently of Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell tap dancing in the movie "Broadway Melody of 1940". Narrated by Frank Sinatra, who said, "You can wait around and hope, but I'll tell you - you will never see the like of this again." It was filmed in one shot, without cuts, and is two minutes and 47 seconds of one of the most marvelous displays of artistry ever seen. I was amazed as I watched it, and then chuckled when I remembered that the reviewer of Fred Astaire's first Hollywood screen test wrote, "Can't sing. Can't act. Can dance a little."

The lesson is that you, too, will have naysayers, scoffers, people who are "Not Your People", refuse to see your talent and ability, blind to your possibilities, ready to dismiss you and count you down and out.

Tap anyway.

Keep tap-tap-tapping at your business, at your chosen work, at your life lessons. You will win, you will succeed, and you will make all your naysayers eat their words. You will find "Your People" who think you are a gift to the world, "Your People" who see beyond your current reality and believe in your future accomplishments, awards and rewards. Hold these Dolphins close, and let the Sharks eat someone else; let the Tuna complain that life is too hard and unfair. Hang out with the Glad ones instead of the Bad or the Sad ones.

Never stop tapping, no matter what slings and arrows of outrageous fortune come your way. You are on the road to success, even when it's raining and the road is steep. The only failure is to stop, sit by the side of the road, and watch others pass you by.

This takes work, mind you. Fred Astaire didn't just say positive affirmations that he was dancing-he danced. Hours and hours, day after day, perfecting his instrument and his ability to create the dance. All the positive thinking in the world won't make you a dancer, unless every day you are dancing.

Keep on tapping. Tap for your joy of it; tap for those who will have joy of your doing it. Tap because tapping is life and art and breath. As the song says, "When you get the chance to sit it out or dance - I hope you dance."
