OWN, the new Oprah Winfrey Network, is looking for experts who want to have their own show. Several people sent me the casting notice saying, “Chellie, you could have your own show!” Hah. Unlike the teeming hordes who seem to be lining up everywhere to get their own TV show, I don’t want to have my own show. But I’d be happy to appear ON a show or two… I always thought Dr. Phil had the perfect gig when he just did his once a week appearance on Oprah years ago. But then he got his own show – a lot more fame, money, power, control, etc. – but then so much more responsibility, duties, long hours, and hard work, too, eh? I’m really much too lazy for all that. But I thought I’d throw my hat in the ring as an “outside the box” expert. What I really love is helping other people realize their dreams in unusual and unexpected ways. My take has always been that true Financial Stress Reduction is this:

THANKS! Here’s my answer to their ad (hard copy, no email address was provided): Dear Carol, I treat money disorders – spending bulimia and income anorexia. I wear gold tennis shoes (only) and have gold sparkly nail polish and I am a Financial Stress Reduction® Coach. But let’s get something straight right off – I don’t want to have my own show. So I’m a little out of the box already, eh? (Not Canadian, just like that expression). I don’t want to BE Oprah – I want to be ON Oprah. Or any other show, like the new ones you are developing. Since the days when I was a professional musical comedy actress, I always preferred the comic lead to the romantic lead. I’d rather play Ado Annie than Laurie in Oklahoma because you don’t have to work as hard, you’re not onstage as much, and then when you do show up you are a bright spot and make everybody laugh. So give me the Ed MacMahon spot on somebody else’s show. Here’s my background: I am the author of two financial/life balance books, The Wealthy Spirit (Sourcebooks, 2002) and Zero to Zillionaire (Sourcebooks, 2006). I’m also one of Marci Shimoff’s “Happy 100” in her recent NYT bestseller Happy for No Reason and am quoted as a “financial guru” by Jack Canfield, Rhonda Britten, BJ Gallagher, Paul and Sarah Edwards, and other top authors in more than 50 books. I teach successful financial strategies in my 8-week course, Financial Stress Reduction® Workshop, and have licensed coaches teaching my workshops across the country. Yeah, and it took a long time to get all that together, so I’m outside your demographic box, too – I’m 62. Can we please reframe what it is to be a woman in her sixties who doesn’t want to retire, and a financial advisor who doesn’t think planning for retirement is the end-all and be-all of your financial life? That kind of thinking will keep you in the box forever. I mean, have you ever met a movie star who said, “I can’t wait until I have my retirement plan funded so I don’t have to do these damn movies any more!”? No. Besides which, 29% of people don’t make to age 65, and a third of the people who do are dead within 2 years. Dying with too much money in the bank is just a lot of wasted opportunity.
