Kaufman “Introductory offer—3.9 percent interest rate!” screams the envelope. It’s another credit card solicitation. I add it to the pile I’ve been collecting, muffling the yell of the last offer of 5.9 percent. I must have forty of them now. It’s always interesting in my class when we start talking about credit card interest rates. People clamor to find out which credit card has the best terms. Should they switch their balances to a new card every time they get a new, lower offer? How can they make sure they notice when the interest … [Read more...]

Clarity

103 - April 13 "I always wanted to be somebody. I can see now I should have been more specific."--Lily Tomlin Years ago, I heard this story: One hot summer's day, a man was driving a truck down the road with a load of penguins in the back. Suddenly, his truck broke down. He got out, looked under the hood, and saw that he could fix the problem but it was going to take several hours. Most of what we think every day is the same old news, endlessly repeated by the same old voices. We may want things around us to change, to improve our circumstances, to get more wealth, health, love, and happiness. But if we want our lives to change on the outside, we have to change on the inside. We must deliberately choose our … [Read more...]

The Saga of the Pants

Updated insider information by Chellie Campbell, author of “The Wealthy Spirit: Daily Affirmations for Financial Stress Reduction” 81-March 22 “It’s a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don’t quit when you are tired, you quit when the gorilla is tired.”—Robert Strauss This tale comes from Corinne and Dave Pleger, who participate in Civil War reenactments with authentic costumes, sets, and props. It is a great lesson in how commitment and intention will take you through breakdowns into breakthrough: “Over a year ago, Corinne took a class that taught her how to sew an authentic pair of Civil War Federal Army pants. Corinne sewed a pair for me that immediately became the envy of my unit. One man, Ron, admired my pants and asked … [Read more...]
